ONGC AI Hackathon :

A Wild Ride, 580 Ideas, and a Billion-Dollar Dream!

When we set out to organize this AI Hackathon, our goal was simple but ambitious— democratization of AI at ONGC. We wanted AI to belong to everyone, not just a select few. And judging by the overwhelming response we received, it looks like we’ve done just that! AI isn’t just for data scientists anymore—it’s for everyone at ONGC who dreams of doing things better, smarter, and faster.
At first, we thought of presenting a detailed graphical analysis—ideas submitted per day, which time of day saw the most submissions, which locations contributed the most, how many ideas belonged to which category. But then, we stopped.
We realized that before diving into charts and numbers, we needed to acknowledge the soul of this movement. Before we analyze the body of data, we need to thank the heart and mind behind it—you, the ONGCians! So, let’s start with a big THANK YOU—to everyone who took time out of their work, field duties, and even their late-night hours to make this hackathon what it became: a viral, history-making moment for ONGC!

580 Ideas, $1.88 Billion in Savings?

Maybe… But That’s Not the Real Story!

From February 11 to 22, ONGCians showed up like never before. We asked for ideas, and boy, did you all deliver—580 use cases came pouring in like oil from a freshly drilled well. If we were giving out an award for enthusiasm, we’d need a separate budget!

Now, before anyone asks— yes, we are aware that:

✅ Some ideas are quite generic
✅ Some are more about purchasing software rather than innovating with AI
✅ Some are clearly AI-generated (wink wink, ChatGPT we see you )
✅ Some are repetitive

But here’s the real insight—after 60+ meetings with teams so far, we can confidently say thatthese types of ideas are not more than 10% of the total .

What about the other 90%? That’s where the magic lies.

Some ideas were downright astonishing — the kind that make you sit up and say, “Why hasn’t this been done already?”

Patent applications are already flowing from some ideas — yes, you read that right. Some ONGCians didn’t just submit ideas; they created innovations that could potentially be patented!

And considering the state of the current Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) papers, we can safely say that 580 technical papers are a given conclusion!The ideas we received weren’t just theoretical; they were research-grade, innovation-driven solutions with real-world applicability.

To be honest, this experience of knowing just 10% of the team behind the ideas and hearing their stories has made our entire organizing team feel deeply grateful.

A Special Shoutout to the Last-Minute Warriors!

Since we too come from engineering backgrounds and have spent time in the field, weknow how last-moment work happens. The final-hour rush, the adrenaline of meeting a deadline— we’ve been there!

So, when we saw the last-minute warriors pushing themselves to submit their ideas, we decided to help them out.

Instead of shutting the portal at the deadline, we gave a grace period of 9 extra hours—just so that those battling slow internet, work commitments, or last-minute inspiration could submit their ideas too.

And you know what? Many of those late submissions turned out to be incredible!

We also know that true creativity strikes at the most chaotic moments—like writing a full essay after the bell rings! Monica's team, or should we say "No No Team"—sister, we are with you! 🚀

This wasn’t about deadlines—it was about ensuring that every voice, every idea, and every innovative spark had a chance to be heard.

Did Udbhav Just Create a ‘DOGE Moment’ for ONGC?

Remember how DOGE of America started as a joke but became a multi-billion-dollar phenomenon? Is Udbhav our DOGE moment? Did this hackathon just prove that ONGC is ready to go to the moon (or at least, to a whole new level of efficiency)?

We will go through every single submission. Yes, even the ones written at 1 AM with the help of ChatGPT (wink wink). Even if it costs us our sleep, every idea will be read, action items will be made, and feedback will be shared.
